The region of Molise, sheltered from the South by the mysterious Gargano's promontory but open to the gentle breezes of the Adriatic from the East, is an area with a very long wine tradition. Cantina Cliternia is situated near the centre for economic and lilitary traffic bound for the Eastern realms during the golden age of Roman Empire, thus it was descripted by Pliny in his "Naturalis Hystoria". By the time Cluvenius visited Cliternium, its fortunes had clearly changed though, since he spoke about "a small town, no longer walled, and with many houses abandoned" ("Cliternium, ubi nunc oppidulum sine moenibus, aedificibusque semidirutis est, in quo pernoctavi"). |

For 25 years now, Cantina Cliternia has made naturally satisfying, honest wines which reflect the excellent quality of the grape varieties grawn in this favoured microclimate tempered, as it is by the sea. The c. 1,100 hectares of vineyards on gently undulating slopes ideally suited to vine and olive cultivation, produce an average of 200,000 hl for year of D.O.C. wine. In view of this potential, the winery's grower members have founded an impressive investment program over recent years. Key items include: a total of 180,000 hl of stainless steel vats, of which 8,000 hl are temperature controlled; a cooling plant producing nearly 1 million chilling units a a bottling line currently capable of bottling 2,500 bts/hour. The winery site extends over 32,000 square meters, of which 10,000 are covered. Bottled sales represent 20% of the total production and are costantly growing. The principal domestic markets are: Molise, Campania, Puglia, Abruzzo and Lombardia. Export markets already acquired include: the UK, Germany, USA and Japan. The remainder is sold in bulk to important bottlers in the centre and north of Italy. Today then, Cantina Cliternia,, with its resources, equipment, advanced vinification techniques and dedicated people is already putting the region of Molise back on the map. |
